Korean Parliamentarian Forum on Global Health (KPFGH)
Although international exchanges have increased across various fields in recent years, international negotiations or discussions related to public health have mostly taken place at the executive level, with legislative bodies playing the limited role of ratifying treaties and enacting statutes. In order to deal effectively with the health issues faced by individual states and the rest of the international community, however, more must be asked of the National Assembly and other such bodies with legislative and budgetary power.
The Korean Parliamentarian Forum on Global Health (KPFGH) was established with the support of the parliamentary Health and Welfare Committee in May of 2015. KPFGH promotes international exchanges and cooperation in legislative areas related to policy, budget, and health systems. In addition, KPFGH seeks mutual solutions to the health issues faced both globally and by specific countries- serving to both boost the global reputation of the Republic of Korea and to contribute to the common prosperity of mankind (Article 2 of the Articles of Association). To achieve these goals, KPFGH conducts the following tasks:
- Conduct public health research on health systems, legislation, and budgetary policy at the national and international level
- Promote exchanges and cooperation on legislative policy across the international community
- Establish and maintain international partnerships between parliamentarians to address public health issues
- Cooperate with and provide support to developing countries in the field of health
- Support inter-Korean health exchanges and cooperation in preparation for unification.
- Develop government administration policies and strategies
- Establish and operate a group that facilitates consultation between academia and civil society in the health sector
- Engage in cooperation and exchanges in the health and environmental fields, such as climate change
- Conduct various related projects to achieve the goals of the KPFGH
